Cala Goloritzè is younger than most beaches in the Mediterranean: it was formed by a landslide in 1962, when a section of the Punta Caroddi massif collapsed into the sea and left behind a fan of white shingle. The cove had no beach before that. What the rockfall produced is now a national monument, protected since 1995, and one of the few Sardinian shores where swimming is permitted but anchoring is not. The cove sits at the southern end of the Gulf of Orosei, in the territory of Baunei, beneath the Golgo Plateau. Above it stands the Aguglia di Goloritzè, a limestone spire rising roughly 143 metres, first climbed in 1981 and still a fixture of European sport-climbing routes.
